About Stable State

Built by a CTO, not an auditor.

Stable State is led by Ross Cooney, an experienced CTO who has been accountable for technology organisations, platforms, teams, budgets and delivery, so we know what a buyer will look for and what it takes to fix it.

Ross Cooney

Founder

Ross is the founder of Stable State. He has led technology in growing businesses as CTO of iamproperty for seven years, as CTO and Managing Director of Ocucon, a technology startup using AI to identify health and safety issues, and as Head of Software at Smith Electric Vehicles, an electric vehicle manufacturer with factories in the UK and the USA.

He has also worked on the commercial side of technology, as Commercial Director at StormMQ, an innovator in AMQP messaging technology, and served on the OASIS working group for AMQP that took the AMQP 1.0 standard to ISO, where it became ISO/IEC 19464. Those roles gave him first-hand experience of being accountable for the platforms, teams, budgets and delivery that boards and buyers scrutinise, and of how technology creates commercial value.

Today he works as a fractional CTO, technology adviser and technical due diligence practitioner. His focus is helping non-technical business owners take back control of their technology, and making sure founders, boards and investors understand what it can support before a transaction puts it to the test.

He still builds. Ross designs and maintains Stable State's open-source security tools, CableProbe, LAN Fence and VLANVerify. He studied at Dublin City University and is based in the North East of England.

How we work

Evidence first

We work from interviews, code, documentation and delivery history, not opinion.

Independent

We tell management and their advisers plainly what we found, including when the answer is that there is nothing to worry about.

Commercial

We connect technical findings to their consequences for the business, in language a board can act on.

Hands-on

We still build. Our open-source security tools are designed, shipped and maintained by the team.

What we do

Our focus is Technology Exit Readiness: helping owner managed and PE backed technology businesses find and fix technology problems 12 to 24 months before investment, acquisition or exit. The work starts with a ClearView assessment.

We also carry out technical due diligence for investors and acquirers, and work with leadership teams as a Technical Partner or fractional CTO, including on AI readiness.

We are based in Newcastle upon Tyne and work with businesses across the UK and internationally.

Talk to the people who will do the work.

Tell us what is changing in your business. We'll tell you plainly whether we can help.
